- IAPN publication recognized as “Top Downloaded Paper”
Publisher Wiley has congratulated Junior Professor Dr. Merle Tränkner on the success of her review article „Functioning of potassium and magnesium in photosynthesis, photosynthate translocation and photoprotection“. Being a “Top Downloaded Paper 2018-2019”, the article belongs to the top 10% most downloaded papers among works published between January 2018 and December 2019 in the scientific journal Physiologia Plantarum.
Co-authors are the former IAPN scientists Dr. Ershad Tavakol and Dr. Bálint Jákli. Together with Merle Tränkner, they had formed the first group of IAPN PhD students. The jointly written article provides an overview of their PhD research results. Topic of the paper is the functioning of K and Mg in processes that are associated with photosynthesis. The article focusses on chloroplast ultrastructure, light-dependent and light-independent reactions of photosynthesis and the diffusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into chloroplasts. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of K and Mg in phloem-loading and long-distance transport of photoassimilates and in the photoprotective mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus. Photoprotective mechanisms are plant functions for self-protection against the negative impact of intense light.
Newest research results on the function of Mg in photosynthesis were published by Merle Tränkner together with her PhD student Setareh Jamali Jaghdani in 2019, in the article „Minimum magnesium concentrations for photosynthetic efficiency in wheat and sunflower seedlings“ (Plant Physiology and Biochemistry).
