Dr. Setareh Jamali Jaghdani

Dr. Setareh Jamali Jaghdani successfully carried out her PhD research at IAPN between January 2018 and July 2021. Afterwards, until April 2022, she worked as a postdoctoral scientist at our institute.

During her PhD research project entitled “Magnesium deficiency induced responses in crop physiology: impacts on photosynthesis, light utilization, and photoprotection“, the influences of magnesium (Mg) deficiency on the photosystem functionality and photosynthetic efficiency was investigated. Furthermore, it included studies on the concurrent role of photoprotective strategies such as formation of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Plant physiological studies were combined with molecular techniques to reveal biochemical alterations in leaves after plants have been exposed to Mg deficiency. The methodologies used in-vivo included gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. In-vitro studies included quantification of the pigments involved in the xanthophyll cycle and the analysis of ROS scavenging enzymes’ gene expression by qPCR.

The PhD project was funded by K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH. Supervision was done by Junior Professor Dr. Merle Tränkner.

Setareh Jamali Jaghdani had successfully completed her Master’s studies at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in the Division of Plant Pathology and Plant Protection at the University of Göttingen in the international Master’s program “Crop Protection” in 2017. In 2013, she did her Bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering-horticulture at the University of Tehran.
